It explains how the CIO of the NFL felt that a lot of her staff were in the wrong positions. She found out what their strengths were and put them into roles that played to them. It was painful and a little uncomfortable at first but in the end, it was the right move.
There is an example of where an upgraded version of radio technology was developed for the NFL. It came about by taking someone out of a role that they could obviously do well but let their strength (which was obviously in another skill set) take over and develop something extremely beneficial to the company.
It is here in the article I am reminded of a quote from Jeff Goldblum’s character in the original Jurassic Park. It is very reminiscent of the roles talented people are stuck in everyday. We are “so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didn’t stop to think if they should“. In this case we are trapped in a job that we can do well but we are not utilized properly or do not use our actual strengths.
This is precisely why I left my last position. I could do almost every job but just because I could, did it mean I should?
So if you are in a position where you feel your strengths are not being leveraged, do something about it. Have a meeting with your boss, try to transfer to another department or try to find another job. If you have to, quit. sometimes you will feel like you have no choice but you do, so make it and start using your strengths….
How do feel that your strengths are not being used?
